The best day of your life

JUST HANG IN THERE!! IT’S THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE!!

Being a bride is a great and unforgettable experience – the day after my wedding, I've put on my wedding dress and danced around in the room like a princess, right down to my wedding shoes – the same shoes that tortured me the previous day.

If I had my way, I would have demanded that each woman gets her perfect fit wedding dress at birth, which then grows with her. She must then at least put the dress on once a day so that she never forget what a beautiful person she is.

For you to understand the essence of this statement, I take you back a few months before my wedding. I got married on 23 September 2006, but I remember wondering in April whether I was ever going to relax again! Nonetheless, I can’t help feeling slightly envious of those of you who are getting married over the next few months.

As is with most brides, one month before their wedding, I was just fed up with all the wedding detail and organisation. If anyone would have asked me – what my hearts desire was, my answer would have been: “That the wedding was just over and done with!” All the choices, organising, dieting and decisions, who to invite and who not to was just too much.

From the moment we announced our wedding date, every conversation started with “How are things going with the wedding arrangements?” Even though they were trying to be nice, I had reached a point where I wanted to assault the next person who said the word “wedding”.

Now, the wedding something of the past, I realise that all of these things makes being a bride such a wonderful and special experience: all the choices, the decisions around the guest list, the dress, the hair clips, the flowers, the shoes…

My message to all the brides-to-be is one of hope. It is aimed at all of you out there who are fed up with all the organising, wedding chats, flowers, and searching for shoes.

Relax and take a deep breath. Savour every last moment of the build-up and smile through the stress.

And believe me – it is worth it! My own wedding was like a mountain in front of me, but now I remember it with pride and joy, not just for my husband (for dealing with me) but also for myself. All the family, friends and colleagues that asked me about the wedding, made it to the wedding unharmed.
